My Target Shopping Trip - 9/12
Target had Glade Scented Oil Candle Tins on sale for $1.66, and I had eleven $1.50 off coupons. I also had three coupons for the full price off of a box of refills when you purchased a tin. I picked up three of the bonus size packages with four refill candles instead of the packages with three refills. In the end, I paid $1.76 for $25.76 worth of candles. (Please note that $25.76 is at the sale price. I did not notice what the regular price is.)
I found two different kinds of BIC pens priced at $1.00 per pack. I used a $1 off 2 packages from the August 9th SmartSource insert, and stacked them with a $1 off 2 packages Target coupon to get two packs of pens for free. They also had packages of BIC mechanical pencils for $1.24 each. I bought two packages, and after using a second set of the same combination of coupons, I paid .24¢ per pack. All four packages totaled .48 out of pocket.
I also bought:
Two Head and Shoulders Shampoo (travel size)--$1.02/ea
Used two $1/1coupons from the 8/2 Proctor & Gamble insert
.04¢ after coupon
Rimmel Mascara--$2.59
Used $2/1 from the 8/23 RedPlum insert
.59¢ after coupon
Three Skintimate Shaving Gel--$1.47/ea
Used three $1/1 coupons
.47¢/ea after coupon
NYC Nail Color--$1.77
Used one $1.00 off any purchase $1.72 or more from September All You magazine
.72¢ after coupon
Otega Taco Sauce--$1.25
I didn’t have a coupon for this, but it was a large bottle on clearance. I love this taco sauce, and I have a hard time finding it.
I also tried to buy two Tide detergents (travel size) at $1.04/ea using two $1/1 coupons from the 8/2 Proctor & Gamble insert, and two Clean ‘n Clear Morning Burst at .99¢/ea using two $1/1 coupons, but was told that I could not use coupons because they were travel sized. I have contacted Target Corporate to let them know that my local Target is not adhering to the corporate coupon policy.
The final tally was:
•Value of merchandise – $59.65
•Less value left on Target card (bonus from last shopping trip) - $1.90
•Less coupons - $50.20
•Total Out-of-Pocket - $7.55
Couponing 101 - Coupon Lingo
I have decided to add a bonus lesson to this week's e-course because I have several readers who are new to couponing, and may not be familiar with the terminology used by most of the other couponing and sample websites.
Some of the acronyms and abbreviations are pretty easy to figure out, but then there are others that stump even the most experienced couponers. I try not to use a lot of abbreviations in my postings - I would rather spell things out so that they are easier for people to understand - but you are bound to come across some of the terms as you use more and more coupons more often.
Here is a list of some of the most common terminology:
- B1G1 or BOGO - Buy One Get One, usually in reference to Buy One Get One Free
- Blinkies - Coupon dispensed near a product in the store from a "blinking" red box
- Catalina - A coupon dispensed at the register with your receipt
- ECB - Extra Care Buck; catalina's available from CVS
- ESB - Easy Saver book; available at Walgreens
- ESC - Easy Saver Coupon; found in Walgreens Easy Saver Catalog
- FAR - Free after rebate
- IP - Internet Printable - a coupon you print off the internet
- IVC - Instant Value Coupon; usually found in Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid fliers
- MFR - Manufacturer
- MQ - Manufacturer coupon
- MIR - Mail in Rebate
- One Per Purchase - Means that you can use "one"
for each and every item purchased - One Per Transaction - Means you can only use "one"
with that order regardless of how many of the item you may have
- OOP or OOPs - Out Of Pocket
- P&G - Proctor & Gamble; usually in reference to the Sunday supplement coupons
- Peelie - Coupon that you peel off the package
- Q - Coupon; generally refers to a manufacturer's coupon unless specified otherwise
- RP - Red Plum coupon insert in Sunday newspaper
- RR - Register Rewards; catalinas available at Walgreens
- SASE - Self addressed stamped envelope
- SCR - Single check rebate; Rite Aids rebate system
- SS - Smart Source coupon insert in Sunday newspaper
- Stacking - Combining manufacturer's coupons with store coupon's to get additional savings
- Tear Pad - A pad of refund forms or coupons found hanging on a store shelf or display
- WYB - When You Buy

Couponing 101 - Lesson 2 - Walgreens

Welcome to Couponing 101 – Lesson 2!
This week we are covering Walgreens. Participating in Walgreens Register Rewards does not require any special memberships or cards. However, you can go to www.Walgreens.com to sign up for weekly emails, and they will often send coupons for bonuses such as a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase.
This week you will be getting nearly $40 worth of merchandise at Walgreens with a net cost total of NOTHING! You may even be able to make a little money in the process. There are other items that you can pick up for a dollar or two.
Question of the Week
This week’s questions comes from Stacy. Stacy asks, “What does Red Plum, Smart Source and Proctor & Gamble mean, and what do the numbers after them mean?”
That is an excellent question Stacy!
Red Plum (RP), Smart Source (SS), and Proctor & Gamble (P&G) are the names of the companies who put the coupon inserts in the Sunday papers. Check near the top of the front page of your flier inserts and you will see which company put that batch of coupons in the paper. The numbers after them are the date that the coupons were put in there. For example – if the description reads RP 8/30, it means that Red Plum put the coupons in the paper on August 30th. The name and date may not be important to you if you clip and file your coupons, but some people don’t clip their coupons. They prefer to file the whole flier, and then just click as they go along.
Lesson 2 - Walgreens
Walgreens uses a system called Register Rewards (RR). The cash register prints the Register Rewards (RR) when you buy specially designated products. The cashier will give you your with your receipt. You then use the Register Rewards (RR) on your next purchase to offset the amount of cash that you are paying out of pocket.

Your Homework
- Plan your shopping list by double checking the specials in your area before you head out to shop. Look over your local flier or click “View Your Weekly Ad” at www.Walgreens.com to see what your local Walgreens is carrying. Because not all of the Walgreens have all of the same specials, you should only use this list as a guide.
- Print all of the printable coupons you plan to use.
- After loading the buggy with your purchase, double check your coupons before you head to the register.
- When the cashier is done ringing up your purchases give him/her your coupons. If you have a coupon for money off the total purchase, you should always give the cashier that one first. Then hand the cashier the rest of your manufacturer's and store coupons. If you have Register Rewards (RR) from previous shopping trips at Walgreens, save them for last. Ask the cashier for your subtotal (the total before taxes), and then hand her the Register Rewards for up to the subtotal amount. It is important to remember that if you use Register Rewards (RR) to pay for something, you should only use them up to the amount of the subtotal. Walgreens will not give you change back if the amount of Register Rewards (RR) exceeds the subtotal.
- Keep in mind that the amount of cash that you will have to pay out of pocket (OOPs) will be greatest the first time that you shop at Walgreens. This is because you probably don't have any Register Rewards (RR) to offset your costs. Future shopping trips will cost you less out of pocket (OOPs) because you will be accumulating Register Rewards (RR).
Interesting Savings Tip
Publix will accept Walgreens Register Rewards as competitor’s coupons. Use the Registers Rewards just like any other coupon for money off your grocery bill.
