Top Five Holiday $$$ Wasters

We all make our holidays budgets and Christmas lists. And we usually end up spending more than we planned. We then try to figure out where all of the money went, and then we are surprised at how much we spent on the unplanned holiday-related extras.

Knowing ahead of time what the big money wasters are can help prevent holiday financial woes and post-holiday credit card stress. The top five holiday budget busters are:

1. Buying presents for too many people, for the wrong reasons. If you’ve fallen into the trap of buying for all your neighbors and co-workers, consider calling a truce or drawing names. (They may be relieved!) If you still feel like you absolutely must give them something, bake it.  Not everyone has time to bake during the holidays, so a plate of cookies may be the perfect holiday treat.

2. Throwaway holiday decorations - including wrapping paper. Go simple this year, use what you have, borrow from a family member who has extra's, or make simple decorations out of what is available in and around your home. You'll be amazed at what you can do with a can of gold or silver spray paint. If you really do need new decorations and accessories, buy them at the after-Christmas sales to use next year.

3. Sending cards to people you can’t remember, who no longer live at that address, or who have died. Prune that Christmas card list with the help of your spouse and save on cards and stamps. Or try sending free e-cards instead; in addition to saving money you won't be adding to the landfill problem. (Believe me, the digital generation would rather get an entertaining, singing and dancing e-card than a paper card any day.)

4. Lights on your house that can be seen from space. Go for creativity and style, not blinding quantities of lights. Not only will this save you money at the store and with the electric company, it will save you the time of putting up and taking down all of that stuff.

5. One-time holiday clothes. That free company dinner isn’t really free if you need a whole new outfit every year. Try to buy timeless reusable pieces like a red sweater set or “little black dress." Stay away from anything that you can only wear during the holiday season.

Money Saving Idea - Health

Split pills. As long as your pills aren't capsules, and your medication isn't time-released, ask your doctor if it's possible to double your dose and then split each pill in half. The cost per dose is likely much lower that way. When a national magazine priced Lexapro, and antidepressant, the 5 mg pills were about $3 each, and the 10 mg pills were only .16¢ more. Be sure to use a pill splitter - a device available for a few dollars at drug stores and mass retailers - to hold the pills in place and help you cut each one accurately.

Price Adjustments Means More Opportunity to Get the Best Price

Don't you just hate it when you need or want to buy something, and it's a little expensive...(in my house that means anything over $20.) So you do the right thing. You price shop it either online or at some local stores. You budget for it so you can pay cash. You mull over whether or not you really do need it. And you finally buy it - confident that you have gotten the best price available.

Only to see that very item on sale at the store you bought it at the very next week!

Good news, my frugal friends, some stores are now offering price adjustments. A price adjustment is when something goes on sale after you have bought it, you can go back to the store and they will give you a credit for the difference between the price you paid and the sale price. Each store has its own rules regarding price matching, so it would be a good idea to give them a call before you storm the customer counter with last week's receipt.

Price adjustments is not the hot new marketing gimmick to win over consumer's hard-earned money. There are some stores that have been doing price adjustments for years (like the now defunct Circuit City). I think though that overall reduced consumer spending has encouraged some stores to expand on the services that they offer their customers.
I think you will be surprised by some of the stores who offer price adjustments:

Banana Republic - offers a one-time price adjustment if an item is marked down within fourteen (14) days of the purchase date.

Gap - offers a one-time price adjustment if an item is marked down within fourteen (14) days of the purchase date.

Hollister - offers a price adjustment if your exact same purchase (same color, same size, etc.) has been reduced within 14 days of the purchase date. They only offer price adjustments for merchandise purchased at the original price (items originally purchased from the Clearance section are not eligible for price adjustments).

JCrew - offers a one-time price adjustment on full-price merchandise within seven days of the retail purchase or mail order ship date if accompanied by the original receipt. Items not purchased at full price are ineligible for price adjustments.

Kohls - If your situation meets all these criteria, you could be eligible for a price adjustment:
  • You bought the item on sale or at regular price.
  • Within two weeks (14 days) of the purchase date, the price of the item was further reduced from the final price you paid.
  • You have the original, dated sales receipt.
  • The item is not a Clearance markdown.
Old Navy - offers a one-time price adjustment when the original sales receipt is presented within fourteen (14) days of the date of purchase.

Nordstrom - offers a price adjustment if the item you purchased is reduced from its regular price, they will accommodate a sale adjustment within 2 weeks from your purchase date.

Target - If Target advertises a lower price either the same week or the week following your purchase, bring in your original sales receipt to Guest Services for an adjustment.

Make Thanksgiving Meal...a Deal.

Julia Scott, aka Bargain Babe, over at Wallet Pop posted a great article on how to keep your Thanksgiving meal costs down. While the advice will certainly come in handy as we prepare to stuff ourselves next week, it is sage advice for all holiday meals and family get togethers! (Thanks, Deb, for this with sharing with me.)

Organic Food Coupons Do Exist

Contrary to popular belief organic food coupons do exist!

There are a lot of great resources for organic coupons if you look! Mambo Sprouts, Delicious Living, and Eat Better America are some of my favorite organic food coupon sites. Many organic food companies also post coupons right on their website, or will send coupons in their email newsletters.

Organic grocery stores often have their own coupons too, such as the Whole Deal book at Whole Foods. Some Whole Foods - but not all - will let you combine manufacturer and store coupons on the same item (call ahead to ask before going to the store). Sign up for store newsletters and mailing lists, and you just might be surprised at the great coupons they send out! One of our locally-owned organic stores mails out coupons for $10 off a $50 purchase, which other grocery stores in our area, including Whole Foods, will also take!

If you still can’t find any coupons for your favorite products, send an email to the company (include your mailing address). If it is a product you already enjoy, compliment them on it, and be specific on the reasons why you like it. If it’s a product you are interested in, say that you have heard about their product and you are interested in trying it, but you are on a budget and you are wondering if they have any coupons available. Above all, be courteous, and your efforts just might be rewarded!

Walgreens Now Price Matches

I just saw this on the I Heart Saving Money blog... What exciting news!

Walgreens is now doing price matching.

You have to bring the actual physical ad from that store but they will match the price. This is terrific as you can imagine the great savings when you add all the awesome Walgreens coupons (and manufacturers coupons) to the price match.

Best of Rite Aid 11/15 - 11/21

The Rite Aid Gift of Savings will be returning next week (Nov 22nd).  The way the program works is, you spend a specified dollar amount and you get a gift check back to use in Rite Aid.
  • Send $25.00 -$50.00  Get $5.00 back
  • Spend $51.00 to $100.00 Get $10.00 back
  • Spend 0ver $100, get $20.00 back
Remember, the amounts are calculated BEFORE coupons!

I'm really excited about the program coming back! The last Gift of Savings Rite Aid had (October?), I made a $36 profit on the over $100 worth of merchandise that I took home for free. I just received my $20 gift certificate last week, so now I have that to use to buy more things that I am going to get for FREE (or possibly even make money on).

You can print $5.00/$25.00 or $4.00/$20.00 coupons HERE.

Another Suggestion
To get the Real Simple Rebate, purchase 3 packages of the Quilted Northern Ultra Plush Toilet Paper. It needs to be 3 packages to reach the $15. I suppose you could mix and match to meet the $15. Then use something else to fill to get the $5/25 or $5/20 coupons.

If buying 3 and using the 5/20 Q, get something else priced at least $2.03, pay $6 (3.97 for TP and 2.03). Get $5 rebate, plus if whatever you get has a rebate as well, then it all could be free. It looks like from the scenario above, buying 4 packs you pay $1 more, but it is still free after rebate (well you do have a little tax to pay).

The Real Simple Rebate can be found HERE! Submit this $5.00 rebate  and get 4 for FREE!  Just remember this has to be mailed by 11/19.

Mail your receipt(s), postmarked by 11/19/09, along with your name and address clearly printed on a 3″ x 5″ card to: Real Simple“Holiday Savings $5 Rebate Offer,” c/o USSC, 625 Panorama Trail (Bldg. 2, Suite 100), Rochester, NY 14625. Please allow 6 – 8 weeks for delivery.

Proof of purchase must be in the form of the original store receipt(s) with the qualifying products and purchase date circled and must be postmarked by 11/19/09 and received no later than 11/21/09.
