Target Corporate Coupon Policy

Target has put their corporate coupon policy online that outlines what coupons they will accept. Their policy clearly states, "Coupon amount may be reduced if it exceeds the value of the item after other discounts or coupons are applied."

In other words, you can use a coupon to by a travel or trial size product as long as the coupon does not specify size restrictions. This also means that anyone who was not permitted to use the $1.00 off Gerber products to buy a .99¢ could do so now (assuming it were still available).

I recommend that you print and carry a copy of the policy with you when you shop. Then, if you have any problems with your local Target accepting your coupons, you can take it out and politely show the cashier what the corporate coupon policy is.

Get Out Those Scissors: September is National Coupon Month

That's right, the practice of getting out the scissors on Sunday mornings to clip coupons from the newspaper is honored with a month of its own.

This month marks the Seventh Annual Coupon Month, and the 100th anniversary since the first coupon appeared in 1909, when grocer C.W. Post offered a penny off his new cereal, Grape-Nuts.

Some organizations and websites are promoting National Coupon Month as a way to bring families together to clip coupons, or as a way to teach children math skills. Those are fine reasons to clip coupons, but with 89% of the population using coupons when shopping for grocery, household and healthcare items at supermarkets, I suspect most people simply want to save money.

According to recent research from the Promotion Marketing Association's Coupon Council, many consumers are already taking advantage of the savings opportunities. A recent survey revealed that:

  • 89% of the overall population report that they use coupons when shopping (for grocery, household and healthcare items at supermarkets).
  • 97% of primary shoppers report that they use coupons at supermarkets.
  • Coupon users report an average of 7% savings on their grocery bill with coupons.
  • Approximately $2.6 billion is saved annually by shoppers using manufacturer's coupons.
  • Today, the average value is approximately $1.25 per coupon.
  • Shoppers who spend 20 minutes per week clipping and organizing their coupons can save up to $1,000 per year
"Consumers love coupons -- they are a great way to economize, stretch the grocery budget and try new products for less than retail price," says Charles Brown, Co-Chair of the PMA Coupon Council.

C.W. Post would have been proud.

A special THANKS to Stacy C. for telling me that September is National Coupon Month. Without her help, this post would not have been possible.

Don't Throw Away Those Expired Coupons!

What do you do with expired coupons? Even if you are an expert at using coupons to save huge amounts of money on your grocery bill, you are still going to end up with expired coupons at the end of the month.  Some stores will accept expired coupons, but most will not.

Instead of throwing away your expired coupons, send them to military families stationed overseas!

Military commissaries overseas accept manufacturer's coupons for up to six months past their printed expiration dates. That means that coupons that are useless to you can still save oversea military families money. Military families are able to use the expired coupons, and just like with your budget, coupons help the military families make ends meet on the small salary of the armed services.

You can contribute coupons as an individual or organize a group to help out in sending coupons. Either way, it doesn't take much effort to make a big difference to a worthy cause.

Before sending the coupons, you will want to check the base list to see which location is in need of coupons. Most military bases receiving the coupons ask that you neatly clip the coupons (which you will want to do anyway to save on postal charges) and sort them into "food" and "non-food" categories. The "food" category should contain coupons for anything that humans would eat, including gum and mints, while the "non-food" category would be everything else (pet food and over-the-counter medications would be considered a "non food" item)

Once separated, add up the value of all the coupons in each category. Place the coupons from each category into a zip lock plastic bag, and write the category and the total dollar value of the coupons on the outside of each bag in permanent ink.

There are a number of ways to send the coupons to the bases. The cheapest is by "Parcel Post". If you chose to send the coupons this way, make sure that the coupons have not been expired for more than two months since Parcel Post takes quite a long time to travel to its destination. The fastest way to mail coupons is in the "One Price" Priority mailers available at your local post office. You can ship as many coupons as you can pack into one of those mailers regardless of the weight.

The USPS requires a "Customs Form 2976-A" to be attached to the outside of the mailer when sending directly to a base overseas. Use the description "Coupons" and record the value as "--$0.00--". Be sure to check the "Gift" box on the form. If the Post Office requests a delivery name, explain that the package is going to a "Position" not to a "Person."  It is "Official Mail."  By military regulations, "Personal Mail" requires a name with the address, but "Official Mail" does not.  The "Commanding General" may be changed as the military wishes but mail to the "Commanding General" is for that position not for the individual who may now be in that post.  The coupons are considered "Official Mail" for that base.

For more complete information on the Overseas Coupon Program, you can visit the website at ocpnet.org. The site also provides a list the of military bases that accept the expired grocery coupons.

"All You" Free Trial

Earlier today I talked about buying a copy of the magazine All You, but I didn't know how much the subscription was through the publisher. This afternoon I went out to their website, and found some terrific news.

You can get a 2 month FREE trial of the magazine from the All You website! If after 2 months you decide you don't like the magazine, simply cancel your subscription and you will not be charged for the 2 free issues. If you do like the magazine, pay $19.90 for a 1-year subscription and receive the remaining 10 issues without delivery interruption.

This .05¢ cheaper than a subscription through Amazon.com (hey, those pennies add up) with the added benefit of being able to check out the magazine first. I've already signed up for my 2 issues! What are you waiting for?

FREE Sample Secret Deodorant

Get a free sample of Secret Clinical Strength deodorant in Light and Fresh Scent. You will have to register with Vocalpoint in order to get this sample, but that's a good thing!

I have been a member of Vocalpoint for about a year, and I have been very pleased with their service. They regularly send me oodles of great coupons for terrific products, they giveaway samples almost everyday, and as far as I can tell they have never sold my email or home address to another company.

Give Vocalpoint a try, and if for some reason you decide that you do not like their service, it is very easy to cancel. I wholeheartedly recommend them!

"All You" is Worth the Cost of the Magazine

I bought my first copy of All You magazine the other evening. I had heard from several people that All You had a lot of great coupons - many of them better than I was getting through the Sunday inserts or online printables - so I decided to check it out for myself.

The first thing I noticed was that the magazine was quite affordable; I believe I paid $2.25 at Walmart. The second thing I saw was that the articles were very practical and applicable to real people. And finally, the reason I had bought the magazine in the first place, it contained over $83 in coupons, and some of them were quite good!

The subscription card in the magazine did not provide a price for a subscription. However, Amazon sells a one year subscription (12 issues) for $19.95 - that's $1.66 per issue. They described the features of All You as containing :

  • Coupons: All You features coupons in each issue; many are high-value and exclusive to the magazine.
Live Well for Less: An inviting two-page, front-of-the-book section offers practical, actionable ideas for saving money.
  • Dress for Real Life: All You features clothing from stores where women really shop at price points they can afford, showcasing many different body types, and often features real women in our fashion stories.
  • Your Health: Providing smart cures and simple ways to boost wellness.
  • We Made it Work: Inspiring first-person stories of women who have overcome challenges in their lives. Recent features have included how four women fought their way out of debt and joblessness, three adoptees searching for their birth families and others bravely beating cancer.
  • Solve Your Family’s Eating Challenges: In each issue an All You nutrition expert solves one family’s eating challenge, offering essential tips and advice on how they can live healthier lives.
  • Reality Checkers: All You is focused on reflecting our reader and her real life in everything we do. A key element to this is its ongoing dialogue with a highly engaged group of over 20,000 readers, the All You “Reality Checkers.” Their tips and photos are featured in every issue, ensuring that all content is “Reality Checked.”
  • Real Family Food: Five easy meals that can be prepared that respect both the reader’s time and budget with cost per serving, prep and cook times included.
  • Feature Articles: Money-saving solutions, low-cost beauty ideas, simple fitness plans, practical home tips and more.

I definitely plan to order a subscription of All You from Amazon right away. I will deduct the cost from my grocery budget because of all of the coupons that it contains, and the amount of money it will save on my grocery bills.

I feel confident enough that I am going to recoup the cost of the subscription in coupon savings within the first month coupon that I am comfortable enough to recommend the magazine to all of my readers.

Please note that I am NOT being compensated in any manner by All You or Amazon for this recommendation. This posting is my honest opinion.

Couponing 101 - Lesson 2 - Walgreens

Welcome to Couponing 101 – Lesson 2!

This week we are covering Walgreens. Participating in Walgreens Register Rewards does not require any special memberships or cards. However, you can go to www.Walgreens.com to sign up for weekly emails, and they will often send coupons for bonuses such as a coupon for $5 off a $25 purchase.

This week you will be getting nearly $40 worth of merchandise at Walgreens with a net cost total of NOTHING! You may even be able to make a little money in the process. There are other items that you can pick up for a dollar or two.

Question of the Week

This week’s questions comes from Stacy. Stacy asks, “What does Red Plum, Smart Source and Proctor & Gamble mean, and what do the numbers after them mean?”

That is an excellent question Stacy!

Red Plum (RP), Smart Source (SS), and Proctor & Gamble (P&G) are the names of the companies who put the coupon inserts in the Sunday papers. Check near the top of the front page of your flier inserts and you will see which company put that batch of coupons in the paper. The numbers after them are the date that the coupons were put in there. For example – if the description reads RP 8/30, it means that Red Plum put the coupons in the paper on August 30th. The name and date may not be important to you if you clip and file your coupons, but some people don’t clip their coupons. They prefer to file the whole flier, and then just click as they go along.

Lesson 2 - Walgreens

Walgreens uses a system called Register Rewards (RR). The cash register prints the Register Rewards (RR) when you buy specially designated products. The cashier will give you your with your receipt. You then use the Register Rewards (RR) on your next purchase to offset the amount of cash that you are paying out of pocket.

Your Homework

  1. Plan your shopping list by double checking the specials in your area before you head out to shop. Look over your local flier or click “View Your Weekly Ad” at www.Walgreens.com to see what your local Walgreens is carrying. Because not all of the Walgreens have all of the same specials, you should only use this list as a guide.
  2. Print all of the printable coupons you plan to use.
  3. After loading the buggy with your purchase, double check your coupons before you head to the register.
  4. When the cashier is done ringing up your purchases give him/her your coupons. If you have a coupon for money off the total purchase, you should always give the cashier that one first. Then hand the cashier the rest of your manufacturer's and store coupons. If you have Register Rewards (RR) from previous shopping trips at Walgreens, save them for last. Ask the cashier for your subtotal (the total before taxes), and then hand her the Register Rewards for up to the subtotal amount. It is important to remember that if you use Register Rewards (RR) to pay for something, you should only use them up to the amount of the subtotal. Walgreens will not give you change back if the amount of Register Rewards (RR) exceeds the subtotal.
  5. Keep in mind that the amount of cash that you will have to pay out of pocket (OOPs) will be greatest the first time that you shop at Walgreens. This is because you probably don't have any Register Rewards (RR) to offset your costs. Future shopping trips will cost you less out of pocket (OOPs) because you will be accumulating Register Rewards (RR).

Interesting Savings Tip

Publix will accept Walgreens Register Rewards as competitor’s coupons. Use the Registers Rewards just like any other coupon for money off your grocery bill.
