Couponing 101 - Coupon Lingo

Welcome to Couponing 101 - Coupon Lingo!

I have decided to add a bonus lesson to this week's e-course because I have several readers who are new to couponing, and may not be familiar with the terminology used by most of the other couponing and sample websites.

Some of  the acronyms and abbreviations are pretty easy to figure out, but then there are others that stump even the most experienced couponers. I try not to use a lot of abbreviations in my postings - I would rather spell things out so that they are easier for people to understand - but you are bound to come across some of the terms as you use more and more coupons more often.

Here is a list of some of the most common terminology:

• B1G1 or BOGO - Buy One Get One, usually in reference to Buy One Get One Free
• Blinkies - Coupon dispensed near a product in the store  from a "blinking" red box
• Catalina - A coupon dispensed at the register with your receipt
  
• ECB - Extra Care Buck; catalina's available from CVS
• ESB - Easy Saver book; available at Walgreens
• ESC - Easy Saver Coupon; found in Walgreens Easy Saver Catalog
• FAR - Free after rebate
• IP - Internet Printable - a coupon you print off the internet
• IVC - Instant Value Coupon; usually found in Walgreens, CVS, and Rite Aid fliers
  
• MFR -  Manufacturer
• MQ - Manufacturer coupon
• MIR - Mail in Rebate
• One Per Purchase - Means that you can use "one" for each and every item purchased
• One Per Transaction - Means you can only use "one" with that order regardless of how many of the item you may have
  
• OOP or OOPs - Out Of Pocket
• P&G - Proctor & Gamble; usually in reference to the Sunday supplement coupons
• Peelie - Coupon that you peel off the package
• Q - Coupon; generally refers to a manufacturer's coupon unless specified otherwise
• RP - Red Plum coupon insert in Sunday newspaper
• RR - Register Rewards; catalinas available at Walgreens
• SASE - Self addressed stamped envelope
• SCR - Single check rebate; Rite Aids rebate system

I knew I wanted to shop at CVS today because I had an extra coupon for $5 off a $30 order that was only good through tomorrow. (I have a hard time passing up an extra $5 savings.) I set my alarm to get up by 9:00 A.M. so that I could get there and shop before all of the deals were gone.

Couponing 101 - Introduction

Do you ever wonder why people bother using coupons?

Since using coupons to get the best deals is a large part of my frugal lifestyle, I have decided to post a “course” on how to go from a coupon newbie to a coupon queen in ten easy steps. I will post a new “lesson” each Monday that will incorporate the bargains found in the Sunday paper from the day before.

To prepare for saving hundreds of dollars on the things you buy every day:

• A box or drawer to store your materials in
• A marker or pen
• A notebook
• Something to store your coupons in (e.g. index card box, envelopes, wallet-sized accordion file, etc.)
• A calculator
• At least one Sunday newspaper each and every Sunday (or at least the coupon inserts and sales fliers)
  

2. You need to commit to:

• Reading this blog at least once a week (preferably on Monday morning) to find out what you need to do that week.
• Going to Walgreens, CVS, and/or Rite-Aid every week to get your free and almost free items.

89% Savings at CVS Today

I bought $56.43 in food and other items this morning for $6.12.That's a savings of more than 89%! And thanks to my CVS Extra Bucks I only paid $1.02 in cash out of my pocket.

I went to CVS specifically to purchase the Revlon ColorStay Mineral Mousse Makeup, a Bic Soleil razor, and a box of General Mills Fiber One cereal. The makeup is on special this week for $9.99 (reg. $13.99) with $9.99 back in Extra Bucks. I had a $1.00 off coupon from the July 19th Sunday paper which turned my net cost into a $1.00 profit. The razor is on special for $6.99 (reg. $7.99) with $3.00 back in Extra Bucks. My $3.00 off coupon from today's paper reduced my net cost to 99¢. The cereal is also on special this week for $2.50 a box, and I had a coupon for .75¢ off that I got from the internet. The other item that I was planning to buy was a Glade Fragrance Collection soy based candle. There is a coupon in today's paper to get one for free.

If I had stuck to my list and only purchased the four items I was there for, I would have only spent $1.74 for $30.16 in merchandise - a tremendous savings! But I didn't.

I know that this particular CVS always has clearance priced merchandise located in three different parts of the store, so I make a point of scouting out those areas for deals. Today I found one box of Carnation Instant Breakfast for $1.42 (reg. $5.69) and Flavour Ice.

The roommate loves popsicles and frozen novelties, and my youngest son is always rummaging through my refrigerator for a snack when he comes over. And I'm always looking for low-cal snacks. I don't mind keeping extra treats around the house for everyone, but I'm not going to sabatoge my grocery budget to do it. At 20 calories each, and just .15¢ a box (reg. $1.50), the Flavor Ice fits the bill. I bought 12 boxes.

My total for the 13 unplanned items? Three dollars and twenty-two cents!

I didn't get any kind of discounts on the two packs of Extra gum. I only bought them because I needed to spend about two more dollars in order to be able to pay for my purchases with a single Extra Buck coupon that was scheduled to expire soon. I could have bought some more Flavor Ice, or looked through the flier or store for another deal, but I can always use gum and it was a quick pick to meet my purchase requirement.

After I got home I realized that the better choice would have been the Extra gum 3-pk that is on sale for $2.00 - less than I paid for 2 packs. Additionally, if I spend $15 on select candies and gums (including the Extra 3-pk.), I get $5 back in Extra Bucks. Since the CVS candy specials usually run the entire month, and I frequently need to spend an extra dollar or two, it's quite possible that I could meet the purchase minimum before the special expired. I'll keep that in mind for next time.

Well, I'm off to Publix now. They have "Buy Theirs and Get Ours Free" deals as well as the 1¢ mystery coupon today. I'll try to blog my savings when I get home.

How I Made $80.42 Shopping

The first thing I need to do is apologize to anyone who checked in yesterday to find out how I made a profit shopping at CVS on Sunday. I had another flood in my apartment and spent most of the day dealing with that. The good news is that both the total of what I purchased and the total of how much I saved are greater than I originally reported. Keep reading…

On Sunday, August 2, I bought the following items at CVS:

1” binders – 2 @ $2.49/ea

Book covers – 2 @ .99/ea (regular $1.99/ea)

Tears eye drops – 1 @ $7.99 (regular $9.99)

EAS meal replacement bars – 2 @ $1.99/ea

Wrigley’s spearmint gum – 1 @ $1.19

Slimfast Multipack Bars – 4 boxes @ 1.67/ea (regular $6.69/ea)

Slimfast Multipack Bars – 1 box @ $1.25 (regular $4.99)

Suave body wash – 2 bottles @ $1.99/ea (regular $2.79/ea)

Softsoap body wash – 1 bottle @ $4.99

Clean n Clear astringent – 1 bottle @ .52 (regular $5.99)

Clean n Clear face wash – 1 tube @ .99

CVS Mouthwash – 1 bottle @ $2.59

I bought everything as two separate transactions because I had a coupon for $4 off a $20 total purchase and a coupon for $3 off a $15 total purchase. By splitting my purchases I was able to use both coupons.

The first transaction subtotal was $20.12 before taxes. I used the $4 off $20 coupon which brought my subtotal to $16.12. I had a coupon for a free EAS bar and a second coupon for up to $3.98 off any EAS product. I had expected to only get both EAS bars for free, but the cashier gave me full credit for the “up to $3.98” coupon which, when combined with the free bar coupon, decreased my subtotal to $10.15. I also used a $3.00 coupon for The Tears eye drops. That brought the subtotal to down to $7.15 – that is 65% less than the original subtotal, or 71% off the regular retail prices!

But then it got even better…

The Tears came with $7.99 (the full purchase price) back in Extra Bucks. I purchased the binders with rain checks issued 2 weeks ago. The special was for $3 per binder with $3 Extra Bucks back on each. The binders that were substituted for the special only cost $2.49 each, but the cashier issued $3 each in Extra. The book covers are a special this week for .99 each with .99 each in Extra Bucks which makes them the same as free. After calculating my savings with the added Extra Bucks, I made a profit of $8.82.

The subtotal for the second transaction was $21 which qualified for the $3 off $15 coupon, and immediately reduced the subtotal to $18. I had a coupon for free CVS mouthwash ($2.59) that had been issued with the Extra Bucks on the first transaction. New subtotal - $15.41. Even though the Slimfast bars were clearance priced I was able to use the five $1 off coupons I had which lowered the subtotal to $10.41. I wrapped up my coupon discounts with two - .50¢ coupons for Suave body wash and a $1.00 coupon for the Clean n Clear. The final subtotal was $8.41. The only item that I got Extra Bucks for on this transaction was the Softsoap, but I received $4 worth. My net cost, before taxes, for this transaction was $4.41 for nearly $52 worth of merchandise – that is about a 92% savings!

After subtracting the net cost of the second transaction from the net profit of the first transaction, I made an overall net profit of $4.41 before taxes on purchases that would have cost most people $76.01.

If reading about how the coupons savings worked has you confused, don’t give up. It sounds more complicated than it really is. The three most important things to remember are: 1) match your coupons to the store sales to maximize your savings, 2) use the Extra Bucks before they expire!, and 3) do it again next week.
